In the midst of 30 kilograms of sweets, BITTERSWEET – A Piece of Candy focuses on and fatalises sweet desire. The choreographer duo tests emotional sugar states on their own bodies and minds, testing the means by which cravings can be stimulated and influenced. By abstaining from sugar for three months during the rehearsal process, they manipulated their consumption behaviour and previous excesses, experiencing feelings of dependency and control as well as moments of stress and phased withdrawal.
The stage is transformed into a labyrinth of sweet temptations, where they become increasingly addicted to sugar under the spell of the ‘sweet magic’. Inner turmoil unites and divides the two as they struggle to find a balance between sensual consumption and self-control. The sweetness becomes the object of desire and at the same time the antagonist, which takes over the existence and actions of the stage characters in different ways. BITTERSWEET dives into an intermediate world, into an imaginary ‘Candyland’ with a bitter aftertaste. It leaves us with questions: to what extent are we trapped in the cage of our reason? To what extent can we break away from paradigms and social norms and experience pleasure again?
